HISTORY &

CULTURE

The Carbon Corridor is quite the cultural hub in Southeastern Utah. With museums, galleries, theaters and more, this area is a great place for those looking to learn and experience all that the arts have to offer!

Downtown Helper is full of fine arts galleries, many of which are housed in historic buildings that have been lovingly restored. You can walk from one gallery to the next, stopping for a cup of coffee or tasty meal in between. The main street hosts a wide variety of events, many of which feature local artists, musicians and chefs. From the annual Helper Arts Festival and First Friday street fair, to the recurring Helper Vibes, it seems that there is something every week in the summer. In the winter, there is one event that stands out from the rest, the annual festival of lights. Helper is known as Utah's Christmas town, and hosts not only the annual light parade but a full suite of holiday events ranging from a Christmas Craft Fair to breakfast with Santa.

Helper's Mining and Railroad Museum is also located in the downtown. This museum is full of artifacts and exhibits that talk about life in Helper and the surrounding area throughout the last century. From themed rooms made to look like the well-stocked Company Story to an old hotel room with a scandalous back-story, this museum has a little of everything! Outside the museum is an old caboose and even more history to be explored.

In Price, visitors can go a little to A LOT further back in time at the USU Eastern Prehistoric Museum. The Prehistoric Museum has exhibits that dive into the rich prehistory of the area, in particular the Native American cultures that are known to have lived and travelled through the area. Much of what we know about these past cultures is from the study of the archaeological sites in the region. From striking rock art to the remains of pit houses and granaries, there are clues as to their ways of life and mysteries around what led them to leave the region. The museum also has an extensive collection and displays on the dinosaurs that long ago roamed the land.

If it is dinosaurs that you are interested, there is also Jurassic National Monument located just to the south of the Corridor, this new national monument holds the Cleveland Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry, which has yielded over 12,000 bones from over 70 different prehistoric animals, most notably, the densest deposit of Allosaurus fossils ever found.
Other opportunities to learn about the prehistoric and recent history of the region include the Museum of the San Rafael in Castle Dale, and the John Wesley Powell River Museum in Green River. The Museum of the San Rafael has exhibits on the local flora and fauna of today and long ago, as well as mineralogy displays and a room devoted to early life of the pioneers that settled in the region. The JWP River Museum offers up the history of the Green River as well as exhibits on Native Americans and the Dinosaurs that once roamed the land.

Once you have spent the day (or a couple...) exploring the museums, there are some great evening activities to round out your cultural experience. From the recently restored Rio Theatre in downtown Helper and the Geary Theater at USU Eastern in Price that book local musicians and theater productions, to the Events Center that brings in national concerts and events for all to enjoy.

If you are looking for a self-guided history and culture experience head out to East Carbon and spend an afternoon exploring the Coke Ovens, and drive up into the book cliffs to see if you can spot the remnants of the old mining infrastructure that peppers the landscape. Once you are there, see if you can get an appointment to visit the Bo Huff car museum. Bo Huff was a well known rock-a-billy local who had a national following for his classic car restorations/customizations. His family maintains his garage as a museum, and many of this custom creations are on display there.
